Perfect for a 3-D demonstration of magnetic fields
~0.5 in. OD x 3 in. long

Description

Why "Cow" magnet? Farmers often place one of these cow magnets in the cow's stomach to attract nails or small pieces of iron that the cow ingests. This prevents damage to a cow's stomach or "Hardware Disease".

This standard Alnico cow magnet is stronger than bar magnets of equal size. Cow magnets have a pole at each end and are perfect for a 3D demonstration of magnetic fields. Simply put the cow magnet into a test tube, then lower the test tube into a clear 16 oz soda bottle filled with mineral oil (or glycerin) and iron filings. Shake the bottle, and watch the iron filings line up all the way around the magnet!

Great Magnetic Field Demo
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Feb 2, 2014
These magnets are impressively strong and are great for demonstrations. You can try the following to create a 3-D view of the magnetic field: - Put some iron filings (about 1/2 lb) into a empty 1L bottle. - Roll up a manila folder very tightly and tape one end shut, and insert into the bottle so the open end sticks out. - Tape around the top of the bottle so the iron filings won't get out. - Put the cow magnet in the folder tube, and shake iron filings. They form a very nice visual of the magnetic field! It helps to put some wadded paper in the bottom of the tube so the magnet is around the middle of the bottle. The iron filings will hold the cow magnet in the tube. I stuck a long screwdriver into the tube to easily pull the magnet out again.

cow magnets rule. Using them with elementary students. They hold up well to the usual wear and tear, unlike the ceramic magnets which crack pretty easily

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Cow Magnet to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

2-PS1-2

Students can use the Cow Magnet to investigate and analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

3-PS2-4

Students can use the Cow Magnet define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

MS-PS2-3

Students can use the Cow Magnet to ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of magnetic forces.

MS-PS2-5

Students can use the Cow Magnet to conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact.

DCI-MS/PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter.

Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties that can be used to identify it.

DCI-MS/PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces.

When two objects interact, each one exerts a force on the other that can cause energy to be transferred to or from the object.

HS-PS3-5

The Cow Magnet can be used to develop and model how two objects interacting through magnetic fields, illustrates the forces between objects and the changes in energy of the objects due to the interaction.

HS-PS3-3

Students can use the Cow Magnet in the design of a device that works with given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

This magnet is an exceptionally strong magnet useful any number of investigations.

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Cow Magnet and other types of magnets to plan and conduct an investigation on the strength of the pushes and pull and exert on objects.

DCI/PS1.A
2-PS1-2

Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. Students can use the Cow Magnet to test for materials that are attracted to a magnet.

MS-PS2-5

The Cow Magnet is a wonderful tool to show the interaction of magnets without contact of those magnets.

HS-PS3-3

Students can use the Cow Magnet in the design of a device such as a Rube Goldberg machine.

DCI/HS-PS2.B: Types of interactions.

Investigations using the Cow Magnet will demonstrate the attraction and repulsion between electric charges at the atomic scale explain the structure, properties, and transformations of matter, as well as the contact forces between material objects.

S&E

Students can use the Cow Magnet to Develop a model to describe a phenomenon.
