They work, but they're really small!

They're magnets, they do attract and repel, but don't judge their size by the photo! Do yourself a favor and check out the dimensions; they should be called matchbox magnets. Much too small for me, I'll be saving up my money and ordering a larger set of bar magnets.

Ok but too small

Too small. Wish they were bigger, different colors and that the poles were labeled

Keep away from stronger magnets

I ordered these and a couple of the cow magnets. These worked OK initially, although they weren't very strong. I got them too close to the cow magnets, then the poles didn't work anymore (north pole would attract north pole, etc). I was able to restore them somewhat with a another magnet, but they were still very weak. I'd recommend skipping these... the cow magnets are much better.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

2-PS1-2

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set to investigate and analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

3-PS2-4

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

4-ESS2-2

Students can do an activity with the Bar Magnet and Iron Filings (M-500) or the Magnetic Field Viewer (M-555) to analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth's features.

MS-PS2-3

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set to ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of magnetic forces.

MS-PS2-5

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set to conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact.

MS-ESS2-2

Students can do an activity with the Magnetic Field Viewer and a bar magnet to construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience's processes have changed Earth's surface at varying time and spatial scales.

DCI-MS/PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter.

Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties that can be used to identify it.

DCI-MS/PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Force.

When two objects interact, each one exerts a force on the other that can cause energy to be transferred to or from the object.

HS-PS3-5

The Alnico Bar Magnet Set can be used to develop and model how two objects interacting through magnetic fields, illustrates the forces between objects and the changes in energy of the objects due to the interaction.

HS-PS3-3

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set in the design of a device that works with given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy.

DCI-HS/PS2.B: Types of Interactions.

Investigations using the Alnico Bar Magnet Set will demonstrate the attraction and repulsion between electric charges at the atomic scale explain the structure, properties, and transformations of matter, as well as the contact forces between material objects.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set and other types of magnets to plan and conduct an investigation on the strength of the pushes and pull and exert on objects.

2-PS1-2

Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set to test for materials that are attracted to a magnet.

MS-PS2-5

The Alnico Bar Magnet Set is a wonderful tool to show the interaction of magnets. Using Iron Filings (M-600) will provide the hands-on experience to show the magnetic field.

HS-PS3-3

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set in the design of a device such as a Rube Goldberg machine.

4-ESS2-2

Students can do an activity with a Bar Magnet and Iron Filings (M-600) to model the Earth's magnet field Place the magnet on a flat surface, cover it a white piece of paper, sparingly sprinkle the Iron Filings over the magnet to reveal the magnetic field. This helps students understand the North/South identification on maps. The Magnetic Field Viewer does not need paper. Just place the bar magnet under the plastic screen.

MS-ESS2-2

The above activity can also model how, over the course of Earth's history, the magnetic field of the poles have swapped location, based on magnetic readings of the Atlantic Ocean floor. Rotate the magnet 180 degrees to model the geologic history of the Earth's magnetic field.

S&E

Students can use the Alnico Bar Magnet Set to develop a model to describe a phenomenon.
