Simply blow a steady stream of air downward onto the top, and it will spin!

Description

This elegant top can be spun by hand, but why use your fingers when you can rely on science? Simply blow a steady stream of air downward onto the top, and it will start to spin! Use a straw for more concentrated airflow, and it will keep going for as long as you continue to blow upon it. Similar to a wind or water turbine, this top is a fascinating way to teach about aerodynamic design, energy, friction, rotational inertia, and gyroscopic stability. Use it "freestyle" on your desk or set it upon its magnetic storage case and watch it go. You can even suspend the top upside down and power it using your breath! Whichever way you try, this top is an amazing demo. Approx 4 cm (1.5") tall. Colors may vary.

Neat concept, cheap plastic

I recently bought several wind gyros. They work really well and are very fun. Unfortunately, the top is made from metallic colored plastic. The plastic chipped very easily from the majority of the tops during the course of normal use and within the first day of play.

Works Great/Cheap Plastic

I was disappointed the wind gyro is made mostly from plastic. I purchased several of these for my kids. I read another review that said no damage had occurred to the wind gyro when it was dropped, so I didn't expect it when the metallic plastic chipped off our gyros during the course of normal use. The chipping doesn't affect the performance of the gryo, which is satisfactory.

works even for younger children

Pretty easy to get this top spinning. Doesn't break when dropped. 6 year old loves it and our 9 year old learned about wind currents. Great top for the money.

Minimal practice to get this spinning and spins a relative long time compared to standard tops. Love the upside down spin from the magnetized shipping container!

My 6-9 year-old science club kids really love this elegant top. One boy became an instant expert, showing everyone how to spin without touching just by blowing straight down. They start lots of conversations.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

K-2-ETS1-2

Students can use the Wind Gyro to develop a simple sketch, drawing, or physical model to illustrate how the shape of an object helps it function as needed to solve a given problem.

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Wind Gyro to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on an object's motion.

K-PS2-2

Students can use the Wind Gyro to plan and conduct an investigation to analyze data to determine if a design solution works as intended to change the speed or direction of an object with a push or a pull.

1-PS4-1

Students can use the Wind Gyro to plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence that vibrating materials can make sound and that sound can make materials vibrate.

1-PS4-3

Students can use the Wind Gyro to plan and conduct an investigation to determine the effects of placing objects made with different materials into the path of a beam of light.

3-PS2-1

Using the Wind Gyro students can plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on an object's motion.

3-PS2-2

Using the Wind Gyro students can make observations and/or take measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.

4-PS3-1

Using the Wind Gyro students can conduct an investigation and use evidence to construct an explanation relating the speed of an object to the energy of that object

4-PS3-4

Using the Wind Gyro students can apply scientific ideas to design, test, and refine a device that converts energy from one form to another.

5-PS1-3

Using the Wind Gyro students can make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties

3-5-ETS1-3

Using the Wind Gyro students can plan and carry out fair tests in which variables are controlled and failure points are considered to identify aspects of a model or prototype that can be improved.

MS-PS2-2

Students can use the Wind Gyro to plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and its mass.

HS-PS2-1

Using the Wind Gyro, students can investigate and analyze data to support the claim that Newton's Second Law of Motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its acceleration.

HS-PS3-3

Using the Wind Gyro, students can design, build, and refine a device that works with given constraints to convert one form of energy into another form of energy.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

The Wind Gyro offers teachable physics concepts at all levels.

The students can use the slow-motion video on their smart phones to capture detailed evidence of the fast moving gyro in their investigations or share information with other students.
