UV Sensitive Putty - Arctic Flare NGSS

SKU #PUT-175
Availability: Out of Stock
Glows orange in the dark and purple in UV light!

Description

After just a few seconds in the sun - or under the black light keychain (included) - this putty's icy WHITE shimmer is transformed to a vibrant PURPLE. Hold the UV light close to the putty to draw an intense line of color, or move it farther away for a PINK glow. Take it outside and watch it react! Then tear it in half to see the unchanged color in the middle. This non-Newtonian substance can be bounced, stretched, pulled, and snapped. Always returns to its original white color and never dries out. Glows ORANGE in the dark. The possibilities are endless! Made in the USA. 91 g (1/5 lb).

Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putties

Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putties are a great addition to anyone's outreach program and/or classroom instruction. EI sells a few of the many made by Crazy Aaron's and at a comparable price, if not a bit cheaper. The UV sensitive putty "Arctic Flare" sold by EI is actually a nickle cheaper. You can also find it for sale at a number of stores and internet sources but be careful who you purchase it from. Also, the Thinking Putties come in small and large cans so be sure to look at your needs before purchasing. EI is a great source and provides methods/scientific explanations. We use the heat sensitive putties, which change color as the temperature changes to go with are program about thermochromatic materials and uses of them. We use the UV sensitive putty to go along with our UV activities. Be sure to keep the putty sealed in the cans they come in when not in use, they will last a long, long time. These are fun to play with. Even the adults get into it! Go to Crazy Aaron's Thinking Putty to find many, many more types of thinking putty, even one that contains real gold!!!!

Kids loved when it changes colour under UV light. The plus point is UV light comes with it, which helps a lot. Very nice product.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

1-PS4-2

Students can conduct investigations showing evidence of illumination from an external source such as the Sun.

1-PS4-4
Electromagnetic Radiation

Objects can be seen only when light is available to illuminate them.

MS-PS4-1

Students can conduct investigations showing evidence that the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in the wave.

MS-PS4-2

Students can use this tool to develop and use a model to describe how waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.

HS-PS4-5

Students can use UV Putty to conduct investigations on how technological devices use the principles of wave behavior and wave interactions with matter to transmit and capture energy.

HS-PS4-3

Students can use the UV Putty to evaluate the claims, evidence, and reasoning behind the idea that electromagnetic radiation can be described by a wave model.

HS-PS4-4

Students can explore the idea that different frequencies of light have different energies, and the damage to living tissue from electromagnetic radiation depends on the energy of the radiation.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

PS4.B

Objects can be seen only when light is available to illuminate them.

MS-PS4-2

Students can use the putty to test different materials to see if the UV waves are being reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials. Colored Putty indicates that waves are transmitted.

HS-PS4-5

Students can use the UV Putty in experiments to support mathematical representations of UV light versus white light.
