Description

Not sure if you're getting too much sun? Use this handy detector. (Only works during daylight hours.)

This detector contains UV Detecting Beads inside of a clear plastic bottle preform. When the detector is shielded from UV radiation, the beads are white. When exposed to UV radiation (between 360 and 300 nm wavelength), the beads turn purple. This detector can change color thousands of times. Our favorite workshop give-away! ~12 cm (5") long Cap colors may vary.

yes these changed color in sunlight--sometimes so quickly even in lsunscreen covered plastic baggies that we could barely get the timer started. came with no instructions except what's written on piece of paper on tube --if beads white your inside, if purple your outside. dah

I work in a museum and need to be able to detect high levels of UV quickly, in order to preserve works on paper. I had been looking around for these UV tubes, this was by far the best deal.

My students love using these to see the amounts of UV light present on different days. I also had some students who decided to use them to test the effectiveness of sunscreen.

My environmental science students have a blast with this during lunch time, and it's great to see them educate others on UV!

AWESOME TEACHING TOOL!

We used these as a great way to teach/assess scientific inquiry and good scientific experiementation with sunscreens. The beads changing color in the sun just added to the excitement of the learning and the students totally wanted to block the sun's rays in their experiements!

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

1-PS4-2

Students can conduct investigations showing evidence of illumination from an external source such as the Sun has UV light.

DCI/1-PS4.B Electromagnetic Radiation

Objects can be seen only when light is available to illuminate them.

MS-PS4-1

Students can conduct investigations showing evidence that the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.

MS-PS4-2

Students can use this tool to develop and use a model to describe how waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.

HS-PS4-5

Students can use this Outside Detector to measure the strength of UV light and to conduct investigations about technological devices use the principles of wave behavior and wave interactions with matter to transmit and capture energy.

HS-PS4-3

Students can use the Outside Detector to evaluate the claims, evidence, and reasoning behind the idea that electromagnetic radiation can be described by a wave model.

HS-PS4-4

Students can explore the idea that different frequencies of light have different energies, and the damage to living tissue from electromagnetic radiation depends on the energy of the radiation.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

1-PS4-2

Students can develop their own value rating system based on the shade/color of the beads. Detector would be used in conjunction with UV beads (UV-AST). UV light beads can be strung onto pipe cleaners (UV-STEM) or rawhide (UV-RAW) and made into bracelets or zip pulls, students develop awareness of where, when and how strong UV light is.

DCI/1-PS4.B

Students get a better understanding of the Electromagnetic Radiation when they manipulate the UV Outside Detector. As long as the detector is shielded from UV radiation, the beads are white. When the shield is exposed to UV radiation, the beads turn purple.

MS-PS4-1

Students can conduct investigations outside with the Outside Detector and make correlations to the Electromagnetic Spectrum and the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.

HS-PS4-5

Students can use these beads in experiments to support mathematical representations of UV light versus white light.
