Understanding Blood Type Interactions through Simulated Blood NGSS

  • Understanding Blood Type Interactions Refill
    Item #: CSI-575
  • - +
Determine the blood type of 4 people, 1 in need of a transfusion.

Description

Full Kit no longer available, only refill.

The earliest historical attempts at blood transfusions often had lethal results. These results led to the investigation and discovery of blood types, as well as a deeper understanding of the importance of antigen/antibody interactions. In this investigation, students in grades 5-college will utilize simulated blood to determine the ABO/Rh blood type of four individuals, one in need of a transfusion. Based on the results, students will then determine which of three potential donors would provide the best match for the patient in need.

Refill Includes:
Simulated Blood Samples (Donor 1, Donor 2, Donor 3, Donor 4)
1 Bottle of Simulated Anti-A Serum
1 Bottle of Simulated Anti-B Serum
1 Bottle of Simulated Anti-Rh Serum
4 packs of 90 toothpicks

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

3-LS3-1

Students can use the Understanding Blood Type Interactions Kit to analyze and interpret data from an investigation to provide evidence that animals have traits inherited from parents and that variations of these traits exist in a group of similar organisms.

MS-LS4-4

Students can use the Understanding Blood Type Interactions Kit in an investigation to construct an explanation based on evidence that describes how genetic variations of traits in a population increase some individuals' probability of surviving and reproducing in a specific environment.

HS-LS1-2

Students can use the Understanding Blood Type Interactions Kit to model the hierarchical organization of interacting systems that provide specific functions with multicellular organism.

HS-LS3-3

Students can use the Understanding Blood Type Interactions Kit in an investigation to apply concepts of statistics and probability to explain the variation and distribution of expressed traits in a population.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

Students will utilize simulated blood to understand blood type interactions and how this information provides practical application for safe transfusions. The Teacher's Manual and reproducible Student Study Guide copymasters provide a framework for teaching and learning.
