It's a little bit of Stonehenge for your window! With this simple kit, students of all ages will discover fascinating new details about the Earth's orbit all year long. Simply affix the gel sundial to a sunny window, and place a sticker on the floor (or wall) where the shadow falls. Repeat daily at the same time. You'll be able to track the Sun's daily path through the seasons. An awesome discussion starter. Why are the shadows longer (and lower) in the winter? What does the path of stickers over time tell us about the Earth's orbit? What happens during the winter or summer solstice? Kit contains one gel cling and 98 removable stickers.

At all grade levels, students will be amazed as the dots accumulate and form an interesting pattern. The Sun Tracker enables students to track the subtle patterns of the Sun-Earth relationship. Earth's spin axis is fixed in direction over the short-term but it is tilted relative to its orbit around the Sun.

Using the Sun Tracker, students can develop and use a model to describe the changing patterns with the data collected. The collected evidence clarifies why seasons are a result of the tilt and are caused by the differential intensity of sunlight.

To use the Sun Tracker, you will need a window with a window facing East, South or West. It's important that the Sun casts a shadow on the floor or wall. Being consistent daily will offer the best results. Even the gap over the weekend or vacation will reveal inquiry possibilities.
