Description

This simple and fun demonstration teaches how torque, speed, and friction can influence the distance an object travels. So many interesting physics concepts can be taught using these two pull back cars; one with high torque (low gear) and the other with low torque (high gear). When pulled back the same amount and then released, both cars travel approximately the same distance, but one gets there in a hurry, while the other takes its time. Approx. 5 cm (2") long. Styles may vary.

The pullback car allows our students to easily discover concepts of speed, acceleration, and conversion of energy. During rolling of the wheels rearward, potential energy is added to the car's spring motor. Upon release, the car's ingenious transmission shifts into high gear to propel the car several meters along the floor. Some of the spring's energy is changed into kinetic energy of the car, illustrating the principal of energy conversion. Students love to 'race' their cars and to compete with distances, speeds, and times of travel.
