Description

This is the best adjustable slit spectroscope we have seen. By varying the amount of light passing into the prism, this portable spectroscope is able to resolve even very close or dim spectral lines. This makes identifying a light source easier and more accurate. Use for examining the spectral composition of white light, sodium vapor or mercury vapor street lamps, LED's, neon signs, and more. Similar to Oliver Sacks' pocket spectroscope which he used as a youth. The metal spectroscope is 20 mm in diameter, 130 mm long when fully extended and has an adjustable light aperture at one end. Light passes through the slit, through a prism and is observed as a spectrum at the other end. Each quality spectroscope comes in its own beautiful wooden box. Solid and lovely but could use a driver's manual

The pocket spectroscope is satisfyingly solid and feels like a quality item--it even comes in a nice wooden box. It's a satisfying thing to carry around. It would be nice, though, if it came with some specific instructions, since it is not immediately evident that you will need to adjust the slit to be able to see the element-specific spectrogram. The handout that comes with the spectroscope is actually all about making your own (much cheaper) spectroscope with a diffraction grating and a cardboard tube, rather than using the snazzy version you have just purchased for $50-plus-shipping.

The spectroscope was a big hit with the glass. We did the lab with the different light sources and related in to gases from our stars.
