Petrified Wood is a fossil from 40 million to 200+ million years old.

Petrified Wood is a fossil ranging in age from 40 million years old to more than 200 million years old. It forms when plant material is buried by sediment and protected from decay due to oxygen and organisms.

Ground water, rich in dissolved minerals, flows through the sediment and slowly replaces the original plant material with inorganic materials (most often a silicate such as quartz but may also contain calcite, pyrite, and even opal.) Most specimens exhibit clearly recognizable bark and woody structures. Can you find them in these samples?

For my 4-5 yr. old students the most important thing is having a tactile item for them to examine. This petrified wood comes at a great price and the pieces are a good size to use with a magnifying glass. They give an opportunity for the kids to compare pieces and start a process where they can discuss and be aware of the world around them. Perfect for my science station.

The petrified wood, the dense wood are for a science exploratory on trees. Observation is important so do not jump to conclusions that dense wood should float. The petrified wood is a fossil ok? The graphite is for for types of rocks.
