Not happy. I ordered the medium ones but they are very small. I would hate to see your small ones!!!
Wanda Bradshaw
Owner Response: I'm very sorry you are dissatisfied. We measure all our owl pellets and medium pellets should be between 1.5 and 2 inches. I suppose it's possible that smaller ones may have slipped through. If you received any that are smaller than 1.5 we will gladly take them back and send you larger ones at our expense.

Had a wonderful time exploring and hypothesizing what animal the owl had for dinner with my Preschool class. There were plenty of bones and skulls to find and observe.

Great pellets! My students loved the booklets that came along with them. The poster and diagrams that were included were really informative and helpful when the kids were identifying each bone. They helped with vocabulary a lot. Each pellet was full of bones and each child could rebuild an entire vole to really see the food web in action.

Great Learning Experience
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Oct 22, 2013
My 4th grade students were thrilled with this experiment! At first they were terrified since they did not know what a pellet was made of. Some thought pellets were "owl poop" and others thought it was "owl throw-up" and all cringed at the thought of "dissecting" these. The educational materials, while too in-depth for our age kids, were very informative and helped jump start a lot of great discussions. The skull diagrams helped students identify their bone specimens as well. Many of our students found multiple skull and jaw fragments, which was way more exciting than they thought it would be. The smaller bones were harder for them to identify, thus not "as fun," but they spent a lot of time pouring over the one skeleton diagram to see if any of bones matched and what the proper names would be. It was a great project to use in our class to wrap up our unit on Vertebrates and bones in general.

We bought these owl pellets after our son had a blast in science class and wanted to dissect more. We found the price to be good, and in the first pellet he found an amazing bird skull, fully in tact. It was worth the shipping!

Students are fascinated at the small bones and skeletons they are able to construct from the pellets. This is such an important area of science: the food chain, the principles of ecology, animal structure and function, skeletal anatomy, and natural history. Hands-on learning is essential in my special education classroom.

Young taxonomists are enthralled by what they find in their owl pellets and highly motivated to use the key to determine which animals parts they have discovered. One of the best hands-on learning experiences we provide to our students.

Owl Pellets

Teaching High School Biology you would think that these would be "too young" for my students, but they love this lab. The product is excellent - most if not all the pellets have very good skulls and multiple other bones. Incorporating this lab into an animal's niche instruction has been excellent.

My Pre-K class was fascinated by the owl pellets. They used tweezers to pick them apart. We spent time identifying the bones we found, and this led to a study of owl prey.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS), as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

K-LS1-1

Students dissect the pellets to observe patterns of what owls need to survive, bones and fur discarded in waste.

3-LS3-2

Students use evidence gathered from the pellets to support the explanation that traits can be influenced by the environment.

3-S&E

Students collect data, analyze and interpret.

K-ESS3-1

Students use evidence gathered from the Barn Owl Pellets to use in a model to represent the relationship between the needs of different plants or animals and the palaces they live.

2-LS4-1

Students learn about the predator-prey relationships in nature.

5-PS3-1

Students use evidence gathered from the Barn Owl Pellets to develop models to describe in animals' food was once energy from the sun.

5-LS2-1

Students learn about the predator-prey relationships in nature including life cycle of prey.

MS-LS4-2

Students dissect the pellets to observe to construct an explanation for the anatomical similarities and differences among modern organisms and the fossil record to infer evolutionary relationships.

MS-LS2-3

Students develop a model to describe the cycling of matter and flow of energy among the living and nonliving parts of the owl's ecosystem.

MS-S&E

Students use large data sets (gathered from the dissection) and mathematical concepts to support explanations and arguments.

DCI-HS/LS1.C: Organization of Matter and Energy Flow in Organisms

As matter and energy flow through different organizational levels of living systems, chemical elements are recombined in different ways to form different products.

HS-LS2-6

Students use classroom data to support explanations of factors that affect carrying capacity of ecosystems at different scales.

HS-LS2-4

Owls pellet dissection is an effective method to launch a mathematical representation to support claims for the cycling of matter and flow of energy among organisms in an ecosystem.

HS-S&E

Students use large data sets (gathered from the dissection) and mathematical concepts to support explanations and arguments with revisions.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

K-ESS3-1
3-LS3-2
5-PS3-1
MS-LS4-2

Dissecting the owl pellets recovers the bones from prey. Students reconstruct the skeleton of the herbivores to identify and count prey. Use charts and research life cycles, energy flow charts, ecosystems and evolutionary links.
