Description

These 3" (~7.6 cm) samples of Nitinol memory wire can be wound around a pencil to form a coil. When immersed in hot water, the wire returns to its original shape. The wires can be "set" into other shapes, using a candle flame. These wires have a smaller diameter than our memory wire sold by the foot. (10 wires per package)

Austinite Strain Temperature, AS = 54oC
Austinite Peak Temperature, AP = 69 to 70 oC
Austinate Final Temperature, AF = 73 to 74 oC

Martensite Strain Temperature, MS = 41 oC
Martensite Peak Temperature, MP = 35 to 36 oC
Martensite Final Temperature, MF = 27 to 28 oC

Metallic bonding is discussed in the chapter on ionic bonding in the book I use. I give each student a piece of nitinol and let them play with its memory properties. I call it a Christmas present. Students are amazed and impressed. Well worth it.

Used this with a lego robotics team that was interested in shape memory alloy for their research project- this was the only place I could find an affordable sample to use with kids- they LOVED it! It is amazing to twist these wires up, drop them in hot water and watch them pop back into their normal shape! They were interested in shape memory alloy for engineering buildings to prevent earthquake damage.

The Memory Wire Sample Packet is everything I expected. I watched a demonstration of memory metal with Jacques during a tour of the Venus Project and thought wow - imagine living in such a fine community. Where the creator cared about people and wanted to build the safest housing possible. In his 90s he was healthy and he bent a large piece of it into a coil - hit it with the heat and voila! Now, I can use this to show others how far technology has come. Thank you for letting me play as an adult when I use this wire in workshops to demonstrate how we bend ourselves around our new partner and how we can straighten-up too! Great product! Thanks! I love science mixed with electricity and magnetism in my relationships! I love your site. This is not the only product I have purchased to have fun with! I feel like a kid in here!

These wires reshape nearly instantaneously. You might want to play with them first - if students tie the wires in tight knots, the wire can't unbend from that. Water doesn't have to be really hot.

I used this with the high school chemistry and elementary science classes as an example of a useful alloy comparing it's properties to Ni/Cr, Onion's alloy and brass. The kids were rivited!
