Melting Snowman NGSS

SKU #PUT-300
Availability: In Stock
Qty.
Build a snowman, then watch him melt into a puddle of goo.

Description

Build a snowman out of the snow-white putty and the included plastic accessories; then wait as he melts into a puddle of goo. This silicone-based bouncing putty has properties of a solid as well as a liquid, and it will slowly ooze to take the shape of its container. The good news is that it can be rebuilt into a snowman over and over again, without the risk of frostbite! 50 g of putty.

states of matter/thermal energy

This is by far one of the best thermal energy/ states of matter labs that I have used. I think students get a variety of skills from using these tools. They get to experience first hand how particle motion and temperature work together. I used the following standard: MS-PS1-4. Develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion, temperature, and state of a pure substance when thermal energy is added or removed.

Ok, so there's lots of science that can be taught with this, but honestly, it's just too cute for words! Everyone needs one!

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

2-PS1-2

Students can analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have the properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

5-PS1-3

Students can use the Melting Snowman to make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

MS-PS1-3

Students can use the Melting Snowman in an investigation to describe that synthetic materials come from natural resources and can have an impact on society.

HS-PS1-7

Students can use the Melting Snowman to construct and revise an explanation for the outcome of a simple chemical reaction based on the outermost electron states of atoms, trends in the Periodic Table and knowledge of the patterns of chemical properties.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

MS-PS1-3
HS-PS1-7

Students can use Melting Snowman to observe a silicone-based putty that has properties of both solid and liquid. Fun for students to produce it over and over again using new sizes and shapes to build the longest lasting snowman. For all students this is a great opportunity to practice data collection and observation skills.
