Thank you for the reasonable price and quantity of this product. I made magnet slime with my Latino students in a program this past summer at the public library. Other vendors wanted too much in an order or they were very pricey. I appreciate the quality of the product you sell. Thank you!

Wanted to demonstrate the earth's mag. field. The loose filings did a great job. Sprinkled evenly to show good field.

too fine
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Nov 19, 2015
First I should say that the product is not defective in any way. The filings are just too fine for us to use with very young children. A strong magnet will not pull all of the filings off of fingers, leaving some to get in eyes, noses, or mouths. I don't have specific information about particle size, but I would say they are halfway between sand and powder.

Item arrived promptly and were in clean condition inside a sealed container. They were used to replicate a radio detector used in the 19th century called a coherer. The homemade coherer worked well and may make an interesting classroom demo!

I needed iron filling for a Science Project for my grandson who is in the 5th grade. The iron fillings were needed to show the strength of electromagnet that he made using nails and a battery. He won Third Place. Thanks

Owner Response: Well, congratulations on his third place win! That's very exciting! We're happy to know that Educational Innovations was able to help.

cosmic weather
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 26, 2012
We used iron fillings and magnets to learn about cosmic weather: kids loved to make magnetic fields visible and explore, how one magnet impacts another magnet's field, and now they understand, what is happening during magnetic storm with Earth's magnetosphere. Very cheap and cool way to learn about sunspots and solar activity!

Great for a science party
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon May 16, 2012
For my son's 8th birthday we had a science-themed party. We did several experiments, and had the kids make hypotheses before and observations after each one. We did one experiment with iron filings on a piece of paper and a magnet below. All the kids loved it! I even sent some iron filings home with each kid.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Iron Filings to plan and conduct an investigation to compare the effects of different strengths or different directions of pushes and pulls on the motion of an object.

2-PS1-2

Students can use the Iron Filings to investigate and analyze data obtained from testing different materials to determine which materials have properties that are best suited for an intended purpose.

3-PS2-4

Students can use the Iron Filings define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

4-ESS2-2

Students can do an activity with the Iron Filings with a Bar Magnet to analyze and interpret data from maps to describe patterns of Earth's features.

MS-PS1-3

Students can use the Iron Filings to gather and make sense of information during an investigation.

MS-PS2-3

Students can use the Iron Filings to ask questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of magnetic forces.

MS-PS2-5

Students can use the Iron Filings to conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact.

DCI-MS/PS3.C: Relationship Between Energy and Forces.

When two objects interact, each one exerts a force on the other that can cause energy to be transferred to or from the object.

MS-ESS2-2

Students can do an activity with the Iron Filings with a Bar Magnet to construct an explanation based on evidence for how geoscience's processes have changed Earth's surface at varying time and spatial scales.

HS-PS3-5

The magnetic object and the Iron Filings can be used to develop and model how two objects interacting through magnetic fields, illustrates the forces between objects and the changes in energy of the objects due to the interaction.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

K-PS2-1

Students can use the Iron Filings in their experiments to see the attraction (pull) or repulsion (push) of different strengths or directions or magnetic forces. Use different strength magnets to show the amount of pull exhibited.

4-ESS2-2

Students can do an activity with the Iron Filings and a Bar Magnet to model the Earth's magnet field. Place the magnet on a flat surface, cover it with white paper, slowing sprinkle the iron filings to reveal the magnetic field. This helps them to better understand the north/south identification on maps.

MS-ESS2-2

The above activity can also model how over the course of Earth's history, the magnetic field of the poles have swapped location, based on magnetic readings of the Atlantic Ocean floor.

2-PS1-1

Matter can be described and classified by its observable properties. Iron Filings are very interactive with any magnets for this investigation.

DCI-MS/PS1.A: Structure and Properties of Matter.

Each pure substance has characteristic physical and chemical properties that can be used to identify it.

S&E

Students can use the Iron Filings to develop a model to describe a phenomenon.
