Description

Large Pumice Samples - For a limited time! The largest volcanic pumice samples we have ever seen... and they still float. In fact, during the spring thaw in the mountains of Oregon, you can see these huge pieces of pumice floating down the rivers! Totally cool! Our Melon Sized Pumice is 8 to 12 inches wide. Our Giant Pumice is over 12 inches wide. Our EXTRA Large Pumice is simply enormous!

Pumice Samples 25 Pack - Your class will erupt with excitement as each student explores and observes the product of an actual volcano. Pumice is a lightweight igneous rock, formed when lava cools quickly above Earth's surface and traps gases before the molten material solidifies. As a result, it contains so many air holes that it floats in water! These are a naturally occurring item. Size and shape are dependent on availability and will vary.

Note: Pumice is a naturally occurring material. It is normal for it to be soft and dusty. This will clean off with use.

Falls apart easily

I like the rock itself, but even when touching it lightly, it breaks apart. Very messy and it will just shrink in size over time. I wish there were some sort of spray they could apply to keep it intact better.

Giant Pumice Sample - Excellent

The first piece of pumice I received was completely mud caked and not recognizable as pumice. I called EI and the person answering located a clean piece that completely met my expectations. It is a great sample and the promise of satisfaction was fulfilled!

Fragile Pumice

This is different from what I was expecting. It is very crumbly, and came covered in powder from crushing in the mail. Not useful for kids as it is so fragile it breaks every time you touch it.

This is my second pumice purchase

I purchased my original piece of giant pumice back about 6 years ago. We are still so pleased with it that we are purchasing a second piece so that we can make a second set of program supplies. It is a "must have" for talking about igneous rocks.

Giant Pumice

The pumice I recived is large but it is not as nice a piece as in the catalog picture. The one I received is very delicate and very mudlike. I had hoped to be able to pass this piece of pumic around my classroom allowing the students to touch and feel it. But it seems to crumble at the slightest touch. Maybe the piece I got is not the norm. It looks as though it might disolve if I put it in water.

What? Rocks can't float

Of course with the big one it is more dramatic. But when kids see the small ones float, they ask what is the "magic trick" ? And you start explaining what is density, mass etc. Great conversation piece.

Awesome gag

I pretend that I can barely lift this rock and struggle and groan and then toss it to a student! Much laughter ensues. I have student's identify what type of igneous rock it is and then raffle it off for charity.
