Geological Flow Demo - Deep Sea Round

SKU #SAND-100
Availability: In Stock

Great for sedimentary rock formation discussions!
10.2 x 2.4 x 11 in. (self supporting)

Description

Rotate the disk and see new sand patterns forming for the next 30 minutes. Students will study it for hours. Great for sedimentary rock formation discussions! Why do some particles seem to form boundary layers between other type of particles. The gold particles seem to always come together in a line, much like a vein of gold found in nature. It is fascinating to observe the flow patterns in the liquid. The final layering is due to differences in particle shape, size, and density. Stand included. Colors may vary. Approx. 10 inch round.

My 8th graders really like this model. Shows flow density movement, I can demonstrate water, land and air changes with this.

Deep Sea Round

This is one of the best purchases I have ever made. I bought it after using the cheaper ($10-15) sand scapes. However, the cheaper ones only lasted a year or less until the water evaporated and the sand stopped falling. The Deep Sea Art has an injector needle that can be used to customize the amount of water / air so that the sand falls at the rate you prefer (slower produces more complex designs). While the price is scary, it is definitely worth the investment. It is the favorite student "toy" on my desk. Highly recommended!

I give it a 4.5 out of 5. It is wonderful to watch the sands flow and create shapes. The minus is that you have to get the amount of air in it just right, and that took a few days. Totally happy with this. I watch it every day.

I was thoroughly enjoying the sandscape while getting it set up & then the boss walked in. Guess who no longer has a sandscape to enjoy???? Now, the whole department wants one!!!The quality of the product appears to be of top notch materials & made to last. We will definitely be back for more!

Hesitated to purchase this because it was for my own enjoyment (I'm retired). Love it and so does my Husband. Would have been wonderful to have in a classroom.

Mesmerizing and thought provoking

I purchased this in September. It still fascinates and intrigues my students 3 months later. Some students still go straight to it when they come to class, and it's a motivator--only students who have completed their work get to rotate it when it's completed a 'fall'. Though my students aren't rough with it, they are middle school kids, and it is durable and sturdy - no breakage issues. Sometimes it seems like it may be losing some fluid because it doesn't always flow as smoothly as it did the first couple months, but we just 'flush it' a few times side to side and it gets back into a constant flow pattern. (Sometimes it gets 'stuck'.) It has inspired students in physical, life and earth science classes, AND promoted discussions on art and rhythm and the properties of fluidity. I wanted to buy this last year, but the price gave me pause. This year I splurged and bought it for myself; therefore so my classroom is the temporary home. But during breaks I bring it home and everyone who interacts with it is impressed if not thoroughly WOWED! I have no regrets. It was well worth the $80.

Geological Flow Demo - Deep Sea Round

This is by far the favorite thing we bought here. We play with it on a near daily basis. Whenever we pass by we flip it over or spin it part way to see the new ways the sand falls down. We'll point out new formations to each other. With about 4 different densities and colors of sand, there's an infinite way these can fall. It's amazing that when it's got air inhibiting a rapid fall, that a slow fall of particles will give you the finest demonstration of many layers. They are so thin and there are so many that it's amazing to see how many layers you can get over a few hours. Sometimes the formations look like mountains, and other times like sand dunes, and other times like the Grand Canyon. The instructions say that water evaporates over time out of the silicon edging and needs to be replaced about once a year. However, we're only half-way through the year and I should have replaced it a few months ago. It comes with a syringe kit to pull out air and then add water back in. It should be easy....I just have to find where I put the box with the syringe and then make sure I have distilled water to squirt back in, a small hassle, but well worth it for the pleasure it gives us.
