Description

Sir Isaac Newton, so the story goes, was hit on the head with an apple, thus giving birth to his theory of gravity...but apples are SO 17th century! Students can use this clever device to easily study the effects of gravity. A digital timer in the center of the G-Ball measures the amount of time the ball is in the air, to the hundredth of a second. The timer begins when the button on the display is released, and it stops when the ball is caught or it hits a surface (maximum 12 meters - about three stories - when dropped onto a fairly soft surface). Students can throw the ball straight up, horizontally, or simply let the ball drop to calculate the height, velocity or magnitude of gravitational acceleration. This is a fun way for students to master the concepts of gravity. Two LR1130 batteries included. Diameter 10 cm (~4").

Acceleration can be a tough sell to our students until they use the G-ball to learn about the acceleration of gravity "g," aka how fast the "how fast" of a falling body changes. With the G-ball, an understanding of "g" is simple, entertaining, and educational. Also, timing from the ball's internal clock along with distance of throw between a student and a friend gives the speed of toss of the G-ball. Students learn that circuitry similar to that in the G-ball keeps the image "upright" on their iPhone screen and enables monitoring of how roughly a package is handled in transit.
