These 1 Yen coins can be made to float on the surface of water.

Description

These real Japanese 1 Yen coins are made from aluminum and can be made to float on the surface of water. Use a paper clip to gently lower the coin into the water and it will float on the surface! Adding a drop of liquid dish-washing soap destroys the surface tension and causes the coin to sink. Includes 50 coins and suggested activities. (These coins are nearly impossible to find in the U.S.) 50 coins per package.

Buoyant Force

These coins are great for teaching displacement. Have the students see how many drops they can place on the coins, while they are floating in water. I truly believe this demonstrates to the students the idea of displacement/Buoyant force.

These yen are not easy to find! Thank you for carrying them. Great demo for surface tension and density. The video is very helpful!

Recently I had the opportunity to buy floating yen coins from Educational Innovations. The order was placed, and shipped the same day and arrived the very next day for my project. Along with the order came their catalogue and you really need to sit and take a moment and view what I consider to be the best catalog I have seen this year. You will be very pleased with the selection, the price and above all their service. Give them a try you will be very glad you did.

A must have for teaching middle school science!

These yen coins are great to have as a teaching tool. I purchased one pack more than 10 years ago and still use the same pack today. My middle schoolers can easily use the yen in fresh and salt water to view density differences. I simply clean them off and put them away until needed again. In addition, the kids love them so much, I sometimes give the yen away as prizes.

The Japanese Yen coins are great for introducing students to surface tension, density, buoyancy. Provides a discrepant event as well.
