Description

How does a gearbox work? What is a planetary gear? How do you design a stable bridge? This is the ideal set for understanding the fundamentals of mechanical engineering. The areas of dynamics, statics, gears, structure, and bracing are all addressed as students learn by building their own working models. The Mechanics 2.0 kit includes 500 pieces for building 30 different models and comes with a full-color, 118-page detailed instruction book. Models require a regular 9V battery (not included) but they can also be powered with the Accu Set (sold separately). The kit comes packed in a sturdy plastic storage box. We recommend one set for every two students. For ages 10+.

Includes 500 components for building 30 different models: Bar • Turntable • Crank Gear 1 • Crank Gear 2 • Inclined Plane with Vehicle • Vehicle 1 • Vehicle 2 • Vehicle 3 Vehicle 4 • Handcart • Cardan Joint • Gearbox • Planetary Gear • Bevel Gear • Kitchen Appliance Differential Gear • Windshield Wiper • Scissor Elevating Platform • Four-bar Chain • Power Hacksaw Machine Beam and Scales • Scales with Sliding Weight • Lifting Tackle • Table • Double Ladder • Girder Bridge Bridge with Underbeam • Bridge with Upperbeam • Cable Stayed Bridge • Crane

You can't go wrong with this kit. There are 30 different contraptions you can build, from a simple table, to a bridge, to a functional crane with a motorized hook, etc. This is a very good way for your kids to spend time other than watching television and learn about how a differential works or how to assemble a planetary gear. Besides the 30 documented models, you can also build your own. I would say 12 years old or higher because some parts require precision and some finger strength to assemble. Sometimes the documentation shows one piece which is actually a combination of 2 and you have to figure it out. You might need to help out your teen for the more difficult models. The cable to connect the battery holder to the motor requires separating the 2 wires at either end, twisting the copper strands and using a screwdriver to fasten the wires to the plugs. Overall, an enjoyable kit. The pieces are well built and fit tightly.
