Students identify each metal cube by determining its density. This classic lab is now available with extra large (easy-to-measure) 2.5 cm cubes of six different metals. Each set includes one cube each: aluminum, brass, copper, iron, lead, and zinc. Plus, students can use the density of the samples to calculate the purity!

A must when teaching density!

I absolutely love the density cubes for teaching both density and metals on the periodic table. Students can determine densities by geometric measurement and also compare the different masses. I like to have students estimate lightest to heaviest with the cubes. After they determine densities we compare their locations on the periodic table. It brings great discussion on atomic size and atomic heaviness..

More than density Cubes

These blocks are great for density labs but they can also be used when teaching moles. Students can mass the blocks and determine the number of moles. This is a good visual to relate molar mass to number of moles as there are seceral cubes identical in size but varying in number of moles. I have three sets and wish I had more. It will work with three sets split and set up in stations.

I bought sets of these metal cubes for each of the campuses that I provide science staff development. They are a fabulous way to introduce density because students (and some adults) equate density with size or mass, not the relationship between them. I use these to create a discrepant event by showing students that they are all the same size and made of metal, and then ask them to predict the mass - all cubes the same or different. The discussions around density are fabulous. Now if Educational Innovations would sell a set of the same metals with all the same mass...

I absolutely loved these for my 6th grade science class. It takes the concept of mass and volume and how they relate to density to a whole new level! It's a great visual for the students to see that it's all about the amount of matter in an object that can be a determination of the density of an object.

Students can use the Density Cubes in a variety of investigations to make sense of the subatomic structure of matter (metals) and how that relates to its properties. Secondary students can do the math (detailed lesson plan on website) to determine the density of each of the six different samples.
