Model bridge building and testing has become a very popular activity in creative problem solving. Middle school and high school students are challenged to design and construct their own wooden bridges, then enjoy the thrill of destructive testing. Bridge building reinforces a wide variety of curricula, including geometry, physics, technology and mathematics. In addition to classroom competition, there are numerous state and national competitions held annually which offer recognition and awards.
Each of our bridge building Classpacks supplies 24 students with wood (15 pieces per student), adhesive and competition design parameters to conduct the competitive lab activity. Or remove the competitive aspect and make it simply a design exercise. You may select 360 pieces of either 1/8 in. x 1/8 in. x 24 in. Balsa or 3/32 in. x 3/32 in. x 24 in. Basswood for this challenging learning activity. Balsa is lighter and easier to cut. Basswood is stronger and has a more consistent density. Be prepared, however, with a lot of weight. The national record for Balsa bridge weighting is well over 200 pounds!!!
