Aerogel, also known as "Frozen Smoke", is a truly space-age material.

Description

Nanotechnology is changing the world. Aerogel, also known as "Frozen Smoke", is a truly space-age material. Silica aerogel contains particles of 2-5 nm in diameter. It is 99% air, but exhibits extraordinary insulation and structural properties, and therefore holds 15 entries in the Guinness Book of Records. You can light a gas torch on one side and it won't get hot enough to light a match sitting on the other side! Some chipping around edges is normal. Classic Silica™ aerogel disc, 27 mm diameter x 7 mm height.

Note: While this material is amazing, the properties that make it amazing also make it inherently fragile. It is intended for adult handling. Handling instructions included.

I'm not disappointed at all with this product. I was expecting it to be smaller to be honest and slightly damaged after travelling all the way from the US to Australia but it was in perfect condition.

I purchased this aerogel for my son. He was thrilled when he received it. It was smaller than I had hoped it would be for the price but still cool to hold.

Frozen smoke!!! Of course it's fragile! This is the coolest thing since sliced bread! I teach middle school and have had this product in my classroom for the entire school year. I allow my students to "hold" this, but I am adamant that they only hold it in the palm of their hand and pass it from their palm to their classmate's palm. I am delighted to have given them this experience! Do not hold it between your fingers and you should be fine. Too cool for words!

Aerogel too fragile to be useful
Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Review star icon Feb 6, 2013
The disclaimer for Aerogel says that chipping around the edges is normal, and that it can't be returned once opened, but even with careful handling, the aerogel I ordered fell apart in a week. I'll keep the broken one I have, but I won't order a new one. $40 is too much to pay for something that fragile.
