A STEM construction toy that's all about the physics of balance.

Description

Octacog is a STEM construction toy that's all about the physics of balance. Experiment and create endless design combinations. Many will balance. Many will not. Combine multiple sets for even more balance construction possibilities.

Octacog is a game that defies gravity: Challenge friends and family to a game of balance. Take your turn by adding or moving a piece. Then, give it a spin. If Octacog stays balanced, you're safe and it's the next player's turn. Who will be the center of gravity? Ages 7+.

Contents: 1 Octacog Core, 7 Balance Rods (9 inch), 2 Large Weights, 2 Medium Weights, 4 Small Weights, 2 Balance Caps, 2 Balance Points, 1 Octacog Game Base, 26 Design Inspiration Cards, and Instruction Booklet.

Also Available: Octacog Expansion Pack

Additional parts enhance gameplay and add new balance possibilities to your Octacog construction balance toy and game.

The added core connection rods, balance rods of different sizes, and an additional Octacog core add even more balance design potential to your Octacog set. Experiment with the physics of balance and create endless design combinations. Many will balance. Many will not.

Contents: 1 Octacog Core, 2 core connection rods (1 inch), 2 Small Balance Rods (3 inch), 2 Medium Balance Rods (6 inch), 5 Design Inspiration Cards, 2 Balance Caps, and Instruction Booklet.

Great for Exploring Center of Gravity

As a modular balance toy, Octacog is pretty amazing. It really does seem to defy gravity. Every time I use it, I seem to discover a new, amazing configuration. A very fun, visual physics toy and game. I've used balance toys and games in the classroom, but this is the first one that is modular. It allows kids (and adults) to EXPLORE center of gravity instead of just witness it.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

3-PS2-1

Students can use Octacog in the plan and to conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.

3-PS2-2

Students can use Octacog to make observations and/or measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.

MS-PS2-2

Students can use Octacog in the plan of an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.

MS-PS2-4

Students can use Octacog in an investigation to construct and present arguments using evidence to support the claim that gravitational interactions are attractive and depend on the masses of interacting objects.

HS-PS2-4

Students can use Octacog as an introduction to an investigation to use mathematical representations of Newton's Law of Gravitation to predict the gravitational forces between objects.

Students can investigate their own center of mass by standing on their left foot on a block of wood. What happens to their body when you ask them to reach left with their left arm? Their right arm and right leg will move to regain balance or Center of Mass. How does this resemble Octacog? Ask them how center of mass helps in riding a bike, skateboard, surfboard, or snowboard.
