These are a great way to show students that fossils are not only from dinosaurs. These petrified wood samples are 225 million years old. Cell by cell the wood fibers were replaced by mineral deposits while the wood's structure remained intact. Wood samples are sold individually, and each sample averages 1-2 inches (3-5 cm) across.
Students can use the Petrified Wood as part of an investigation to gather information and evidence to support claims for early life in the Geologic History of Earth.
With close examination and research about the fossil, students can make inferences about Earth's history, common ancestry, diversity of life and adaptation.
Any hands-on activity with fossils will create a strong foundation for Geologic History lessons at all grade levels.
