Description

All plastic soda or "pop" bottles start as a small plastic tube called a preform. When this preform is heated and blown into a bottle shape, it is ready to be filled with your favorite carbonated beverage. Our preforms come with full-sized final threaded openings so they use standard plastic soda bottle tops (included). Use them for a problem-solving activity by seeing if your students can guess their use. All bottle caps may be used again and again. These preforms are air and water tight when covered tightly with a bottle top and so are perfect for collecting or storing liquid samples.

Preforms are ~11 cm long x 2.5 cm in diameter (~4.3" x 1"). Interior volume of preform is approximately 25 cc (~0.84 fluid oz). The polymer in our baby soda bottle preforms is polyethylene terephthalate, commonly known as PET. This polymer has a monomer formula mass of C₁₀H₈O₄, a melting point of 260^o C, and a specific heat of 1.0 kJ/(kg-K). It has a glass temperature of 70^o to 80^o C, when it starts to soften. Package contains 30 Preforms and 30 bottle caps. Bottle caps sold separately as well. Cap color may vary.

Note: Our new preforms are slightly shorter than prior models but they will still fit in your Preform Rack (TT-100) - and they're still perfect for Super! Wow! Neat!® experiments.

I use these Preforms as Geocaching containers. They are about the best option out there for that purpose. They are not 100% waterproof, but I currently use one for an "Underwater" geocache and as long as you set it up so that the cap end is always down, it doesn't leak a drop. I use a lot of them for "Kayak Caches" and they are in the Florida sun all year long. The cap plastic will last a year, but by two years, you need to replace them. I save soda bottle caps all the time for this purpose.

caps for preforms

like others, I bought the preforms for Geocaching containers. The preform itself is rock solid. But the apparent robustness of the caps is less than it's been in the past. I'm afraid the caps I received will fail must more quickly than the old design. Is there a better cap available?

Owner Response: We apologize for the size change. We were not able to get the original sizes any longer. We listed the new size on our website and in our catalog, but we will try to make it even more obvious, especially for our customers who have purchased in the past. The good news is that they still fit in the preform rack and though they are a little shorter than they used to be, they are also a little wider, so the overall capacity didn't change dramatically.

Preforms were purchased on a lark, but have been useful in storing my daily meds while away from home. These preforms are pretty heavy duty and would store meds, extra cash etc in a water proof container.

Everything was just as I hoped. I use the baby soda bottles for geocaching--they hold a log book (rolled up on a BBQ skewer) and a bit of small swag. They keep everything dry in rainy Oregon. Perfect.

Soda Preforms

These things are SO COOL!! My two young boys (who are also in Cub Scouts) want to geocache this coming summer, and we thought it would be great fun to hide our own caches for our scout pack. They're also great for storing marbles when traveling to a friend's house!

These preform tubes are great

They make perfect geocache containers since they are waterproof and indestructible. I have nearly a hundred placed on rivers and creeks. As long as the cap is screwed on correctly, they always stay dry -- even after being submerged in raging floods. Educational Innovations has the best price I've found. Hopefully they won't catch on and jack it up.

Cap safety ring is still there

This is my second order from this site. I am pleased with my product. , However on both orders. I was shorted part of my order although it was inconvenient they promptly replaced the missing items so it should be checked closely upon receipt to ensure accuracy

I used both orders of the Preforms as Cache Containers for Geocaching. The first order of 30 went out on a Power Trail I made of 30 caches. The next order of 60 are being worked on for another Power Trail. They paint up very well and can easily be hidden to be later found by Geocaches. I also liked that fact that I placed the order in the morning, it was processed that same day and I received the product the next day by UPS. Finally as cache containers they are affordable.
