Magnetic Sand Timer

SKU #MAG-300
Availability: In Stock
Qty.
Instead of sand, the Magnetic Sand Timer is filled with black iron filings.

Description

Instead of sand, the Magnetic Sand Timer is filled with black iron filings. Set the device on its stand and watch the metal grains arrange themselves into a beautiful, spiked sculpture. What's the secret? A powerful rare earth magnet is hidden in the base. Each time you turn it over, a different pattern is formed as the ferrous material is drawn into the magnetic field. Not intended as a real time-keeping device; actual times will vary. About 14 cm (5.5") tall. *Note: If the "sand" is not going through to the bottom of the timer, it may have become magnetized. Just give it a good shake, and it should start flowing freely again.

This is such a nice item, my kids and I are enjoying this a lot it does feel fragile so kids can use it only when I am there. They are so amazed on how it works with the magnet and without ..

neat magnet but not a timer

iron filings pile into a neat sculpture but get stuck with about 25% left in the top bulb each time
Laura Dent
Owner Response: Iron filings will develop a charge over time. If this happens, they can get stuck in the neck. To discharge them simply give the timer a good hard shake, and they should start flowing freely again.

It is really cool for as long as it lasts. I Had to buy a second one after the first one broke and then the second one broke too. The glass is really fragile.

Still worth it . . .

As noted in several other reviews, this "timer" is not useful as a timer due to the fact that the iron filings clog the passage and you must tap the hourglass to make them continue to fall. That said, it is still fascinating to students.

Owner Response: Because the iron filings (sand) become magnetized over time, when you notice the filings getting stuck in the middle, just give the timer a good solid shake to demagnetize the particles. It should flow smoothly again.

Disappointing

This works, but the iron filings clog the hourglass frequently. You have to keep tapping it to make it keep running.

Enjoyable

I thought this would be closer to a minute (not that its 42 seconds is a deal breaker). It'd be nicer if the final arrangements differed more between each other. But a nice stuffing stocker I guess.

Sadly, this timer broke after very little use. The bottom class piece broke off. It's very fragile

This is kinetic art as well as a timer. The students enjoy making different iron filing sculptures as well as watching it time.

Nice magnetic fields novelty and great to compare to Bubble Timer. Clear glass makes patterns easy to see, but breakable for young children.

Great way to show magnetism. I purchased this for my desk and my students can't keep their hands off it.

Broke immediately

This had the potential of being really cool; however, as soon as I took it out of the package, the magnet in the base was so strong it pulled the hourglass quickly towards itself and cracked the glass. A warning would've been helpful! Or the hourglass could've been made from something other than the thin fragile glass, which was used.
