Description

The Air Power Soccer Disk is perfect for demonstrating Newton's Third Law of Motion: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction. The soccer disk glides on a cushion of air in a nearly frictionless environment. Runs on 4 AA batteries (not included). 18.4 cm (7.25") diameter.

My students and I really enjoyed this product. They are a cost effective way to teach so many principles of physics, and the blog post they have was very helpful.

Works OK with lithium batteries

With new alkaline cells, it runs on a smooth surface such as counter top, but not on my vinyl floor, as it rides barely off the surface. I did get it working better using lithium cells - two LiFePO4 3.2V cells and two dummy cells. For example: http://www.ebay.com/itm/2X-IFR-14500-600mAh-3-2V-LiFePO4-battery-AA-consumer-type-2X-spacer-1charger-/281389939530?hash=item418425bb4a:g:XdEAAOSwbqpT9rHE LiFePO4 cells require a matching charger. They are light weight, and a pair is slightly higher voltage than 4 standard batteries. With LiFePO4 AA cells, it becomes a usable product.

Inferior

I have several of these from different companies. This is by far the poorest one. Even with new batteries, it barely hovers.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

2-PS1-1

Students can use the Air Power Soccer Disk to plan and conduct an investigation to describe and classify different kinds of materials by their observable properties.

3-PS2-2

Students can use the Air Power Soccer Disk to make observations and/or measurements of an object's motion to provide evidence that a pattern can be used to predict future motion.

5-PS1-1

Students can the use the Air Power Soccer Disk to develop a model to describe that matter is made of particles too small to be seen.

5-PS1-3

Students can the use the Air Power Soccer Disk to make observations and measurements to identify materials based on their properties.

MS-PS1-4

Students can use the Air Power Soccer Disk to develop a model that predicts and describes changes in particle motion.

MS-PS2-2

Students can use the Air Power Soccer Disk to plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.

HS-PS2-1

Students can use the Air Power Soccer Disk to investigate and analyze data to support the claim that Newton's Second Law of Motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on a macroscopic object, its mass, and its acceleration.

Students can use the Air Power Soccer Disk in a number of investigations on states of matter, air friction, and air pressure. Newton's Laws of Motion become tangible when using the Air Power Soccer Disk. First Law (inertia, momentum, Second Law (force equals Mass time acceleration and Third Law (action-Reaction) can be demonstrated and investigated when using two or more of the Air Power Soccer Disk. Adding variables in surface materials, weight to the Air Power Soccer Disk and collisions allow students to explore.
