Take it for a spin!

Description

This amazing, magnetically levitated top is the only one we have seen that spins horizontally. Spin the top and observe the patterns created by the alternating colors and your persistence of vision. The device operates in a very low-friction environment. Take it for a spin! Colors may vary.

Approximate dimensions:
Base - 12.5 cm x 8 cm x 3.5 cm high (5" x 3.2" x 1.4")

Very good

its performance is very good and to see it also when still is always amazing; the levitation air gap is very thick not so almost invisible as the diamagnetic levitation.

Even though low friction, the top is not balanced, so it does not spin very long.

My students were enthralled when I wouldn't tell them how it worked. Given time, many of them figured it out by themselves, and of course explained to others. What a great educational experience for them.

I have used this item to help the students understand aspects of magnetism, light, sight, and Newton's laws of motion. They get a big kick out of spinning it and waiting for it to finally stop.

This amazing, magnetically levitated top is the only one we have seen that spins horizontally. Spin the top and observe the patterns created by the alternating colors and your persistence of vision. The product does exactly what it does and its easy to get the object to levitate. Kids are amazed by it.

NGSS

This product will support your students' understanding of the Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS)*, as shown in the table below.

Elementary Middle School High School

1-PS4-2

Students can make observations of the Revolution Top to construct an evidence-based account that objects can be seen only when illuminated.

3-PS2-1

Students can use the Revolution Top to plan and conduct an investigation to provide evidence of the effects of balanced and unbalanced forces on the motion of an object.

3-PS2-3

Students can use the Revolution Top in an investigation to determine cause and effect relationships of magnetic interactions between two objects not in contact with each other.

3-PS2-4

Students can use the Revolution Top to define a simple design problem that can be solved by applying scientific ideas about magnets.

4-PS4-2

Students can use the Revolution Top in an investigation to develop a model to describe that light reflecting from objects and entering the eye allows objects to be seen.

4-LS1-2

Students can use the Revolution Top in an investigation to describe that animals receive different types of information through their senses, process the information in their brain, and respond to the in information in different ways.

MS-PS2-2

Students can use the Revolution Top to plan an investigation to provide evidence that the change in an object's motion depends on the sum of the forces on the object and the mass of the object.

MS-PS2-3

Students can use the Revolution Top in an investigation that asks questions about data to determine the factors that affect the strength of magnetic forces.

MS-PS2-5

Students can use the Revolution Top to conduct an investigation and evaluate the experimental design to provide evidence that fields exist between objects exerting forces on each other even though the objects are not in contact.

MS-PS4-2

Students can make observations of the Revolution Top to describe that waves are reflected, absorbed, or transmitted through various materials.

MS-LS1-8

Students can make observations of the Revolution Top to gather and synthesize information that sensory receptors respond to stimuli by sending messages to the brain for immediate behavior or storage as memories.

HS-PS2-1

Students can use the Revolution Top to plan an investigation and analyze data to support the claim that Newton's Second Law of Motion describes the mathematical relationship among the net force on the macroscopic object, its mass, and acceleration.

Suggested Science Idea(s)

The Revolution Top can be used for two completely different science concepts as shown below.

Spin the top and observe the patterns created by the alternating colors and your persistence of vision. The eye and brain hold on to a series of images to form a single complete picture.
