True goldenrod paper is made from a dye which is an acid/base indicator. This paper turns bright red in bases such as ammonia, baking soda or washing soda and returns to bright yellow in acids such as vinegar or lemon juice. Make your own indicator paper or use to preserve hand prints. Instructions included. Color-changing goldenrod paper has become very difficult to find. Ours is guaranteed to be color-changing.

Great STEAM station

My students were so amazed to see the goldenrod sheets change to red! They kept looking on the paper at the red handprint and then back at their own hands to see if their hands were red. It felt like a magic trick. I used the baking soda and water in a spray bottle to spray their hands. Once they put their hand print down on the paper, I used vinegar in a spray bottle to spray away their handprint. Magic! I also used Q-tips to write messages on the goldenrod paper. So much fun!!!

Always a crowd pleaser

Each year at our Halloween Extravaganza we look for fun engaging science activities that fit the theme. The Golden Rod color change paper is always a big hit. Last year we used small pieces to prove "ghost blood" and this year we used them to make make "bloody handprints." It was fun to see the adults even get into the activity and wow over the science of the activity.

Estimated pHs that react to the paper

These are all approximations based on internet pH values for these substances. My students and I tested various substances. At the lowest end of the scale goldenrod appears to react with baking soda at pH 8, a slower reaction than with sodium carbonate at pH 10-11. So I'm guessing a solution with a minimum pH close to 8 is needed to show a reaction. I soaked the goldenrod in a solution of baking soda and water and it dried red. When this was tested with an acid, it reacted with lemon juice at pH 2 and also with buttermilk at around pH 5 (listed as being pH 4-6, so I split the difference). Whole milk at pH 6 showed no reaction. So this version soaked in baking soda solution will react up to around pH 5. This paper with the Patriotic chemistry kit was a good intro to pH and experiencing the changes that occur. And safe enough for the students to try in their own homes in our remote summer class.

Halloween effect

We are able to use this paper for a stunning effect in our Halloween Murder Mystery. Lady Macbeth tries to wash her hands clean, but a bloody handprint appears on the letter from her husband, Macbeth.

Goldenrod Paper

There is not much more I can add to the 27 reviews and the potential experiments one could do with the paper. However, those interested in making their own goldenrod paper and then using it to carry out the experiments can find the recipe on the Chem13 News web site: https://uwaterloo.ca/chem13-news-magazine/february-2016/activities/how-make-goldenrod-paper-and-some-activities Everyone should have a ream or two of goldenrod paper on hand. It works like litmus paper in telling whether a solution is acidic or basic but it is another chemical. Should the litmus test become the goldenrod test? Fun product. Thanks for carrying it once again. Since there are some difficulties with disposal of the paper, I would suggest you include how to dispose of them safely in your description the sheets come with.

Bloody Handprints

I buy this product every year for Halloween. We make 'Bloody handprints' or messages and learn the science concepts around the activity. My 7th graders LOVE it!

Golden Rod paper

Absolutely perfect for the Cause/Effect lessons in my Concrete Comprehension Strategies book. My order arrived in a timely manner and I am please with the quality. It is a bit pricey, but I solved that by cutting the sheets in two.

Writing with electricity is my favorite demonstration - wet paper with salt water, place on metal sheet (aluminum foil), connect sheet to positive side of a voltage source (9V battery or wall wart), then write with a wire connected to the negative side of the battery or wall wart. The electrolysis reaction creates (tiny amounts) of hydrogen gas and lye at the negative electrode, raising the pH and turning the paper red.

Bloody Handprint!

What a great product for my Halloween Science unit! My students were absolutely amazed when I dipped my hand in "water" and the "blood" came oozing out of my hand after I slapped it on the goldenrod! Of course we eventually discussed the science behind it. What a hit! Thank you, EI!

I use the goldenrod paper to teacher/review the scientific method. I use it day one. The students have their first lab experience, a homework assignment and a name tag for their desk. I am hoping they will also get it in card stock.

If I could give this a 6 I would! I was almost out of this wonderful paper when I got your email that you had it again. This paper is perfect for teaching pH. I cut it into strips for my students so they can test to see which materials are acids or bases!

Work this demo in around Halloween time

Had this paper taped on the board for a few days before the demo so the students would be use to the paper being there...large beaker filled with a basic solution, lecturing and "accidentally" dropped something into the beaker...fished out the thing and let out a yelp, spun around and splashed "blood" on the paper...great fun!

While I searched and searched for cheap golden rod paper at the office supply stores (and was running the risk that it was not real goldenrod and would not work as an indicator)-- I was delighted to find it here at Educational Innovations. Save yourself the time and money-- just buy it here. Works just like it is supposed to work.

Magic Year Opener!

I started the first day of class last year by asking chemistry students to predict what would happen if they used clear, colorless 'ink' (looked like water) to write on the paper. Their predictions varied, but the reactions from students were unanimous when they tested their predictions: they were all wowed and excited!

Suggested Science Idea(s)

Color-changing goldenrod paper has always been made with a dye that, when exposed to a base, changes from bright yellow to blood red. The student can use the Goldenrod Paper in an investigation about acids and bases.

The Goldenrod Paper can be used as indicator paper. By applying bases and then acids, students can make observations and gather evidence. It will also produce inverse reactions, when an acid is applied to the red area of the paper.

The Goldenrod Paper is to be used with the Goldenrod Electrochemistry Kit. Goldenrod paper, salt water and a little electricity make a really stunning demonstration of electrochemistry Each sheet is useful for one lab. It can be dried and used again, but best results are with a fresh sheet.
