| Did You Know? |
Every year the topic comes up: Can you
balance an egg on one end on the day of the Spring Equinox? Debate has
raged over this so-called phenomenon for years. In actuality, anyone
with patience and persistence can get an egg to balance on one end any
day of the year. But why?
Many people say that the egg balances because the yolk sinks to the
bottom, thereby lowering the egg's center of gravity. The keen
observer will note, however, that egg yolks are less dense than the
whites (albumin). This is because the yolks are lipid. Try breaking
an egg into a graduated cylinder. The yolk will rise to the top. So
while people are correct in guessing that the egg's center of gravity
has been lowered, it is due to the white sinking below the yolk, not
the other way around.
This
interesting insight was brought to us by Joanne Suttile of St.
Margaret's School in
San Luis Capistrano, CA.

We know, you love our website. We do too, but it's
time for a facelift. Don't worry, it will still be as informative, fun, and
user-friendly as it is now. In fact, it will be even more informative,
with downloadable lesson ideas, extra information, and more! Look for
it in May of this year. We're all very excited about it, and we think you will be, too!
