Discover magnetic eddy currents with this amazing demonstration of Lenz's Law.
Eddy Current Kit
Drop two metal plugs through a copper tube, one at a time. One falls slowly; one falls quickly. With one copper pipe whole and one with a viewing slit, use as a discrepant event. After students learn the principle of Lenz's Law with the solid copper pipe, they are amazed to see it work the same with a slit. In each copper tube the falling magnet sets up an Eddy current whose magnetic field attracts the falling magnet. Each kit includes a copper tube, two test plugs of similar size and mass (one non-magnetic and one magnetic), two end caps for self-contained storage, and instructions. This is one of our favorite demonstrations. Each tube is approx. 1.6 cm (3/4") dia. x 30.5 cm (12").
