One end of each sample has been highly polished, allowing students to observe much more detail within the structure of the fossil.
Larger View
These interesting specimens of petrified wood have originally come from tree branches. What sets these samples apart from others, and what interested us, is that one end of the sample has been highly polished. Polishing allows students to observe much more detail within the structure of the fossil. It is even possible to sometimes identify rings and gaps in the original wood that have been replaced by minerals. Millions of years ago these samples were covered with volcanic ash, mud or lake sediment. Without oxygen, the plant material could not decay and dissolved minerals slowly entered and precipitated in the individual plant cells. Red or yellow colors come from iron oxides and blues, purples, and blacks come from manganese oxides. Samples range from 40 to 70g.
Fulgurite - Lightning Fused Sand
What happens when nearly 1 billion Joules of lighting energy strikes sand? These tubular formations are typical of the result!
Geodes for Splitting (package of 6)
These whole, unopened geodes and can be easily split open, using an ordinary hammer, to reveal a variety of crystal formations within.
Geodes Slices
Set of six slices of highly polished geodes. You can clearly see each layer of the different minerals.
Graphite from the Franklin Pierce Mine
Show students a chunk of graphite from an old historic mine in New Hampshire. They will be fascinated with the idea of writing with a piece of mineral.
