By Polymer Ambassador, Lynn Higgins

When the 1L bottle is shaken, blue and white beads mix as expected. However, when allowed to settle, the beads separate, white at the top and blue at the bottom. Then, the two separated colored beads slowly come together in the center of the liquid. How often do you see something floating in the middle of the liquid? Great for illustrating so many concepts: solubility, density, miscibility, the salting out effect... Spontaneous order from disorder! Isn't this a violation of The Second Law?? (Rubbing alcohol not included.)

Additional Products

Colored Sand Motion

Comprised of two hourglasses with different colored sands, the sand in one hourglass will float while the sand in the other sinks!
Density Paradox (set of two)

This is an awesome discrepant event for your most advanced 'density' students! Great for demonstrating how temperature can affect an object's density!
Density Sphere Experiment Kit

Designed to permit students to discover and apply concepts of density and buoyancy.
Mixture Separation Challenge

Using only table salt and water, students are asked to develop a method for separating this mixture of four different small plastic beads.
