What better gift to give that special colleague or student than a textbook published 50 to 150 years ago? What did they understand? What didn’t they understand? It is fascinating to read the author's depth of understanding and even the knowledge that has since been forgotten. In the 1870's cookbooks could still be found advocating using Cu²⁺ ions to color pickles, whereas John Scoffern in 1839 admonished the public for adding a poison to pickles, merely for the sake of adding color! I have collected hundreds of old science books from used bookstores for over fifty years and now is the time to make them available to others.
